Since the middle of the 16th century, Libya was under the
Ottoman's sovereignty. After the Italo-Turkish war of 1912, Libya became an
Italian colony, but their defeat in World War II was liberated and fell under
UN Administration.
In 1949, the UN General Assembly declared Libya an
independent country by January 1, 1952. On December 24, 1951, Libya declared
its independence from France and Britain, becoming Libya's the United Kingdom,
a constitutional and hereditary monarchy under King Idris.
Muammar Gaddafi led a coup d’état that overthrew the sitting
king on September 1, 1969. This led to the establishment of the Libyan Arab
Republic. However, after the demise of Gaddafi in 2011, December 24, has been considered
Libya Independence Day, was reinstated as a national holiday. It commemorates
the independence of Libya from its colonial masters.
