Osman Nuri Pasha
Osman Nuri Pasha was born in 1832, Tokat, Ottoman Empire
and he died on 5 April 1900, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, known commonly as
Şanı Büyük Gazi Osman Paşa (Glorious Warrior Osman Pasha), was an Ottoman field
marshal. Numerous songs have been composed for him, and so many places have
been named after him, as he was one of the most distinguished and decorated
Ottoman pashas among all time. This is primarily because, during the Siege of
Plevna in 1877, he decided to hold the city for five months against remarkable
Russo-Romanian forces. For his bravery, he was given the title Gazi
("warrior" or "veteran"). Osman was granted the Title of
the Medjidiye and the Imtiyaz Honors for his services to the Empire, throughout
addition to his Adjutancy title. The Sultan appointed him Marshal of the
Palace, and the Ottoman military anthem Plevna March, which is still used in
Turkey today, was written in honour of his achievements in Plevna.
