Bahadur Shah Zafar: The Last Mughal Ruler of India

The final Mughal ruler of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was born in Delhi in 1775. Although he was born under the name Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Muhammad Bahadur Shah Zafar, Bahadur Shah Zafar became his more well-known name. His mother was Lalbai, while his father was Akbar Shah.

After the passing of his father in 1837, he ascended to the throne at a fairly advanced age. The Mughal Dynasty, which dominated India for approximately 300 years, was led by him as its final emperor. Because of the growing influence of the British, he did not use a firm hand in governing his empire.

While Bahadur Shah Zafar was in power, Urdu poetry flourished and achieved its zenith. His creative inclination can be traced back to his poet paternal grandparents. Even in the literary realm, he made an impression. The themes of love and the supernatural were common throughout his poetry. Even the human suffering at the hands of the British was documented in his writings. He was also a major supporter of prominent modern Urdu poets including Mirza Ghalib, Zauk, Momin, and Daagh. A large number of his Urdu Ghazals disappeared during the war of 1857. A few of them were preserved and later published under the title Kulliyat-I-Zafar.

In 1857, Bahadur Shah Zafar launched the first Indian War of Independence. The rebels made him their leader and he took command. Although the insurrection was initially successful, the superior British army quickly put an end to it, and Bahadur Shah Zafar was deposed. Although the revolution failed, many revolutionaries still recognised Bahadur Shah Zafar as India's legitimate Emperor. Accused of betrayal, Zafar had been hiding out with his three sons and grandson in Delhi near the tomb of Humayun when the British troops found them and executed all four. For unknown reasons, he was sent to Rangoon, Myanmar, in 1858, where he remained until his death in 1862, at the ripe old age of 87. He was laid to rest in the Bahadur Shah Zafar Dargah, a shrine opposite the Shwe Degon Pagoda on Ziwaka Road No. 6 in Rangoon.
